General Insurance Course
To start your career as an Insurance Broker in British Columbia, you must get the General Insurance Level 1 license by passing the Fundamentals of Insurance Exam. This in-person course prepares you for entry into BC’s general insurance sector. You’ll build a solid foundation in how policies are structured, what risks are covered, how deductibles and limits work, and how to serve clients responsibly. Expect real-world scenarios, form walkthroughs, calculation practice, and timed quiz drills so you’re ready for the licensing exam route and your first role in an agency.

Licensing Body
Regulator: Insurance Council of British Columbia (ICBCouncil).
This program prepares you for the Level 1 general insurance licensing pathway. Licensing decisions, eligibility, supervision rules, and application timelines are set by the Insurance Council of BC; additional steps and fees apply after training.
Requirements for General Insurance License
- REducation & exam (choose one route): pass Fundamentals of Insurance (FOI) or CAIB 1; recognized equivalencies include certain Insurance Institute courses (e.g., CIP C11 + C130). Exam results are normally valid for up to one year toward licensing.
- RSponsorship: apply with a licensed general insurance agency; Level 1 licensees must work under agency sponsorship.
- RSupervision & scope: Level 1 must work under supervision, cannot sign insurance contracts, and are restricted to working on agency premises unless they complete the Council Rules Course.
- RAge & suitability: at least 19 years old, of good reputation and suitable to be licensed (includes a criminal record check as part of the application).
- RLegal Authorization to Work in Canada
EXAM CRITERIA / INFORMATION
- RFocus areas: principles of insurance and risk; personal property and liability; automobile (Autoplan context); policy wordings, deductibles, limits, endorsements; underwriting basics; claims process; documentation and disclosure; ethics and privacy.
- RPractice: case studies with forms, calculation drills, and full-length mock exams; exam-writing strategy is included.
- RBooking: register directly with the designated provider (e.g., IBABC/Insurance Institute or recognized course provider); separate exam fee applies; valid government photo ID required.
- RNext steps: after you pass the qualifying exam, finalize agency sponsorship and submit your licence application to the Insurance Council of BC.
