Basic Security Training (BST)

To work as a Security Guard in British Columbia, it is required that you complete the Basic Security Training (BST). At Lead Community College, we provide you with all the guidance and preparation you need to complete the training course and pass the assessment exam to be conducted by Justice Institute of British Columbia ( JIBC ). Upon passing the exam, you will receive the BST certificate, which is required to get the security worker license to start working.

This classroom-based program prepares you for frontline security work in British Columbia. Through scenario practice and real-world examples, you’ll learn powers and limitations, incident response, patrol techniques, documentation, and professional communication. The course aligns with the learning outcomes commonly required for Basic Security Training (BST) so you’re ready for the provincial exam and licensing steps that follow.

EXAM CRITERIA / INFORMATION

  • RFocus areas: Legal authorities and limitations, professionalism and ethics, report writing and notebook, radio codes/procedures, emergency response basics, patrol and observation, conflict de-escalation and safety.
  • RPractice: Timed quizzes and mock exam included; exam-taking strategies covered in class.
  • RExam: You will register separately for the exam and pay applicable exam fees. Valid government ID required on exam day.
  • RNext steps: After passing the exam, apply to the BC regulator for your Security Worker Licence (separate application, fees, photo, and background checks required).
